The Excretion of Carbon Dioxide by Frog Nerve

چکیده

1. Quiescent sciatic nerve of the frog discharges CO(2) at the average rate of 0.00876 mg. CO(2) per gram of nerve per minute. 2. Sciatic nerve steeped one minute in boiling water discharges CO(2) at first at a low rate and after an hour and a half not at all. 3. Degenerated sciatic nerve discharges CO(2) at a slightly higher rate than normal living nerve does. 4. Connective tissue from the frog discharges CO(2) at an average rate of 0.0097 mg. per gram of tissue per minute. 5. Assuming that a nerve is composed of from one-half to one-quarter connective tissue the CO(2) output from its strictly nervous components is estimated to be at a rate of 0.008 mg. CO(2) per gram of nerve per minute. 6. Stimulated sciatic nerve increases the rate of its CO(2) output over quiescent nerve by about 14 per cent. When this number is corrected for strictly nervous tissue the rate is about 16 per cent. 7. The increased rate of CO(2) production noted on stimulation in normal sciatic nerves was not observed when they were boiled, blocked, or degenerated. It was also not observed with stimulated strands of connective tissue.

Excretion of Carbon Dioxide by Frog Nerve

In discussing the results of my work on the CO2 produced by dogfish nerve Dr. Loeb pointed out the desirability of conducting similar studies on the sciatic nerve of the frog. The suggestion appealed to me and I resolved to undertake the work. I had of course not the remotest idea at the time of our conversation that the report of these studies would form a part of a memorial volume to Dr. Loeb...

The Respiratory Quotient of Frog Nerve during Stimulation

1. By means of a differential volumeter the increased oxygen consumption and the increased carbon dioxide output of frog nerve during and after stimulation have been observed. 2. Measurements of the R.Q. of nerve by this method are complicated by the retention of carbon dioxide. Attempts were made to avoid this (a) by studying the nerves at high CO(2) tensions to make the retention small and (b...

The Respiratory Rate of the Sciatic Nerve of the Frog in Rest and Activity

1. With the indicator method of Haas, the rates of carbon dioxide production have been measured in the case of the sciatic nerve, various parts of the brain, and the sartorius muscle of the frog. The rate of respiration of the sciatic nerve is from 10 to 30 per cent of that of the other tissues, varying somewhat with the individual. 2. Stimulation of the sciatic nerve with induction shocks suff...

Studies on curariform activity of hayatinin methochloride, an alkaloid of Cissampelos pareira.

Experiments were carried out on the isolated phrenic nerve diaphragm preparation of the rat and isolated sartorius nerve muscle preparations of the frog (Rana tigrina), for the comparison of the neuro-muscular blocking activity. The preparations were set up in 100 ml organ bath containing Tyrode solution at 37°C for rat diaphragm and at room temperature for the frog muscle preparation. The solu...

Effects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity of frog dorsal skin nerve

Clonidine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist not only induces analgesia but also prolongs the effects of local anesthetic substances. In the present study the effects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity from dorsal skin nerve were investigated. The results showed that clonidine (0.5 mM) decreased the formalin effect on electrical nerve activity whereas clonidi...
